    Abstract:

Random genetic drift is one of the key processes of population genetics and evolution. The single most important approach to random genetic drift is the diffusion approximation. In this talk I reconsider theoretical results in the literature concerning the diffusion approximation. Solutions of the diffusion equation will be discussed that differ from the accepted ones. These will be shown to be in greater accord with intuition and lead naturally to generalisations of existing results for fixation probabilities.
